Rhonda Byrne is the author of “The Secret“, the book and the movie that inspired millions of people across the globe, and one of the most famous LoA authors today.
She was born 12 March 1951, in Australia. She began her career as a radio producer, and then moved into television production. The turning point in her life was the year 2004: the six-part true crime series Sensing Murder that she was producing at a time when she was plagued with troubles; her company was effectively bankrupt; her father died that year, and her mother was having a hard time dealing with his death.
According to her biographers, it was her daughter who showed her a copy of “The Science of Getting Rich“ by Wallace D. Wattles with the words: “It will be OK” on one particularly difficult morning in 2004. This book opened Byrne up to the New Thought movement and to the idea of the Law of attraction – she was so excited with the idea that people’s thoughts could influence their life and that they could attract things, like magnets, that she spent the next two and a half years tracing Wattles’ philosophy.
She began implementing the Law of attraction, and was amazed with the changes it brought to her life, both personally and financially. And she decided that she had to do a TV show project about it, to share this “secret” with the rest of the world.
With Channel 9 behind her, she went to the US to interview 50 authors, philosophers and teachers who shared this belief in the power of thoughts, and in 2006 the movie “The Secret” appeared. Byrne didn’t intend the movie to have the cinema or television release, but it became an almost instant hit thanks to Oprah Winfrey, word of mouth and Internet downloads, which led to the explosion of DVD sales.
The same year, Rhonda Byrne wrote the book with the same title. According to the official website of “The Secret”, the book “has remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 190 weeks and was recently named by USA Today as one of the top 20-bestselling books of the past 15 years.” It generated her an income of $12 million in 2006.
Rhonda Byrne wrote two more best sellers: “The Power” (2010) and “The Magic” (2012).
She rarely appears in public now; there were many controversies regarding the movie, including the dispute with Esther Hicks, an American spiritualist who played a crucial role in an early version of The Secret but was subsequently edited out of the film. “The Secret” has been criticized as simplistic and contradictory by many spiritual teachers, but this book and movie are still considered classics of self-help writing, and have indisputably contributed to the popularization of the concept of the Law of Attraction.
Teaching and Philosophy
The Secret that Rhonda Byrne discovered is the Law of attraction. She believes that whatever you put your attention on, becomes reality in your life, and it’s all based on the energy that all the universe is made of, and the vibrations of that energy.
All energy vibrates at certain frequencies, and people, being also made of energy, are vibrating at their own frequencies as well. They act like energy fields within a larger energy field that is universe. According to Byrne, the frequency at which a person vibrates is determined by their thoughts and emotions, attracting other things that vibrate at a similar frequency.
That logically leads to the conclusion that, if you want to attract an object or something else that vibrates at another frequency, you have to change your own frequency by changing your thoughts:
Thoughts are magnetic, and thoughts have a frequency. As you think, those thoughts are sent out into the Universe, and they magnetically attract all like things that are on the same frequency.
You have to increase the amount of time in your life that you’re actually feeling good, if you want the Law of attraction to work for you. That’s why you should strive to live in a state of love and gratitude – the vibration that this will create will attract only the good things to your life. Byrne insists on that: “If you only do one thing with knowledge of The Secret, use gratitude until it becomes your way of life”.
Life is supposed to be fun! When you’re having fun, you feel great and you receive great things! Having fun brings the life you want, and taking things too seriously brings a life you have to take seriously.
The truth is that the universe has been answering you all of your life, but you cannot receive the answers unless you are awake.
When you want to attract something into your life, make sure your actions don’t contradict your desires.. Think about what you have asked for, and make sure that your actions are mirroring what you expect to receive, and that they’re not contradicting what you‘ve asked for. Act as if you are receiving it.
Your power is in your thoughts, so stay awake. In other words, remember to remember.
